The Chinook is a northern breed that was developed to pull heavy loads over a long distance at a quick pace, and were used on Admiral Byrd's South Pole expeditions. They are recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service. They are not like an Alaskan Malamute, Siberian Husky, Alaskan Husky or Samoyed, although there are some similar traits within all the breeds. Huskies are the racers of the sled dog world, with the Alaskan Husky and Siberian Husky being the most common speedsters in sled dog racing. The Alaskan Malamute is a freighting or sledge dog designed to pull heavy loads long distances. The Chinook may not go as fast as a Siberian or Alaskan, nor pull as heavy a weight as the Malamute, but they are very capable of pulling a heavy load for a long distance at a very good clip. They are more of a recreational sled dog for those not looking to win the Iditarod.
